Ink Tree House

Project Overview
In this ink treehouse perspective project, students will design and draw an imaginative treehouse using one-point or two-point perspective. Using ink as the primary medium, students will focus on creating the illusion of depth, structure, and dimension through strong line work, contrast, and detail.
This project combines technical drawing skills with creative design, encouraging students to think like both architects and illustrators as they construct a believable structure within a natural environment.

Objectives
Students will:
* Demonstrate understanding of one-point or two-point perspective.
* Accurately use a horizon line and vanishing point(s).
* Create the illusion of three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface.
* Use ink to develop clean line work, texture, and contrast.
* Design a creative and structurally believable treehouse.
* Incorporate environmental details (branches, leaves, ladders, platforms, etc.) to enhance realism.

Materials
* Drawing paper
* Pencil (for planning and layout)
* Ruler
* Fine liner pens or brush pens (black ink)
* Eraser

Process
1. Planning & Sketching: Begin with a light pencil sketch, establishing the horizon line and vanishing point(s).
2. Structural Layout: Use rulers to construct the main forms of the treehouse in proper perspective.
3. Refining Details: Add platforms, windows, stairs, rope bridges, railings, and other imaginative elements.
4. Inking: Carefully trace final lines in ink, varying line weight to create emphasis and depth.
5. Value & Texture: Use hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, or contour lines to add shading and texture.
6. Final Cleanup: Erase visible pencil marks once the ink is fully dry.

Assessment Criteria
* Accurate use of perspective
* Strong structural design and creativity
* Effective use of line weight and ink techniques
* Attention to detail and craftsmanship
* Overall composition and visual impact

Creative Challenge
Think beyond a simple platform—consider multiple levels, unexpected angles, rope bridges, slides, or lookout towers. How does your structure interact with the tree? How can line variation and texture make the drawing feel more dimensional and dynamic?

This project highlights how careful perspective drawing and expressive ink techniques can transform a simple concept into a visually compelling architectural illustration.

Learning Objectives / Student Targets

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

Ohio Fine Arts Standards (Visual Arts)

Creating (CR)

Develop a practice of engaging with sources for idea generation.
Students brainstorm and design imaginative treehouse concepts.

Select appropriate creative processes for solutions to artistic problems.
Students construct treehouses using correct one-point or two-point perspective techniques to solve spatial challenges.

Performing (PE)

Refine artisanship while modeling persistence.
Students demonstrate controlled ink application, precise ruler work, and clean line execution.

Organize elements of art and principles of design to intentionally construct works.
Students intentionally apply perspective, proportion, scale, space, and line weight to create depth and structure.

Responding (RE)

Expand relevant vocabulary to analyze and interpret works of art.
Students analyze how perspective systems and line weight create depth and realism.

Develop art criticism methods when responding to artworks.
Students explain design choices and how architectural structure interacts with its environment.

Apply self-assessment and goal-setting practices to revise artworks and document growth.
Students use rubric criteria to assess perspective accuracy, craftsmanship, and creativity, and revise accordingly.

Connecting (CO)

Connect universal themes in visual arts to personal life experiences.
Students incorporate imaginative and personal ideas into their architectural design.

Explore how works of art can impact issues relevant to various communities.
Students explore architectural influences, environmental themes, or cultural design considerations in their work.

Grading Rubric

Rubrics have become popular with teachers as a means of communicating expectations for an assignment, providing focused feedback on works in progress, and grading final products. A rubric is a document that articulates the expectations for an assignment by listing the criteria, or what counts, and describing levels of quality from excellent to poor.

Student Reflection

A student reflection is a brief, thoughtful explanation of how and why a student created their artwork, including the choices they made, challenges they faced, and what they learned during the process. In art, reflection is important because it helps students develop critical thinking, recognize growth, strengthen their creative decision-making, and take ownership of their artistic development.

Element of Art & Principle of Design

Element of Art

Form
Definition:
A three-dimensional object that has height, width, and depth.

Key Points:
* Has volume and takes up space
* Can be real (sculpture) or implied (drawing)
* Created using shading and perspective

Types of Forms:
* Geometric forms – cube, sphere, cone, cylinder
* Organic forms – natural, free-flowing shapes
* Open form – allows space to pass through
* Closed form – solid and compact

Texture
Definition:
The way a surface feels or appears to feel.

Key Points:
* Adds realism
* Can create interest and depth
* Can affect mood

Types of Texture:
* Actual texture – can be physically felt
* Implied texture – looks textured but is smooth
* Rough texture – uneven
* Smooth texture – even and flat
